FAQS

  • What is Prospect?

Prospect New Orleans is a citywide contemporary art triennial and the only exhibition of its kind in the US with a decade-long history. Every three years, we invite artists from all over the world to create projects in a wide variety of venues spread throughout New Orleans.

  • What is a contemporary art triennial?

Contemporary art biennials and triennials are exhibitions that take place at regular intervals and bring together a large group of artists. A triennial occurs every three years. Prospect is spread across New Orleans in multiple venues. Multi-venue biennials and triennials of this kind are new to the United States, although they have long histories in Europe, South America, and Australia and more recent histories in Africa and Asia. Some other models similar to ours are Desert X (Palm Springs), FRONT International (Cleveland), the Hawai’i Triennial, the Toronto Biennial, the Berlin Biennial, the Liverpool Biennial, and the Istanbul Biennial.

  • Who organized the Prospect.6 exhibition and how is it funded?

The roster of artists in the exhibition was organized by the Susan Brennan Artistic Directors of Prospect.6, Miranda Lash and Ebony G Patterson. Prospect fundraises for the exhibition from foundation, corporate, and individual contributors. Other important sources are the Prospectors membership group and the Gala fundraiser.

  • Why is Prospect so spread out and what’s the best way to see the exhibition?

We think of Prospect as a way to see the city through the eyes of artists. New Orleans is a city of neighborhoods and experiencing Prospect also asks visitors to traverse the city’s network of neighborhoods. Venues range from traditional art organizations like museums to public spaces to non-art venues. It is recommended to have a car and to allocate two full days to see the entire exhibition… and to have a meal, have a drink, and embrace the unexpected while you’re at it.

  • How much does it cost to attend Prospect?

Prospect is free to the public except for the venues that regularly charge admission.

  • How were the Prospect.6 artists selected?

The Susan Brennan Artistic Directors of Prospect.6, Miranda Lash and Ebony G. Patterson, selected the Prospect.6 artists after many studio visits and conversations. Prospect exhibitions are not open calls; the selection of artists is a process that takes place over many months as the Artistic Directors develop a theme for the exhibition and consider the artists who are influential to the articulation of that direction.

  • How are the Artistic Directors selected?

Prospect selects Artistic Directors that the organization considers to be some of the leading curatorial voices of our time.

  • Is Prospect just an exhibition?

No! Prospect works with a number of organizations in New Orleans to create collaborative programming. This includes artist talks, student studio visits with Prospect artists, working with youth interns, and creating opportunities for artists to impact public space.
